Built in 1984 when still part of Castlegar parish, the church became the centre of a new parish in 1986. It was designed by Cyril Bowman of Galway, with sanctuary fittings by artist Ray Carroll and construction by James Farragher & Co., Tuam. The building cost about £360,000. Its roof features coloured, scalloped slates recalling older Galway decoration. It was dedicated by Bishop Eamonn Casey on 12 May 1984. The new parish was placed in Franciscan care, with Fr Ralph Lawless OFM as first parish priest.
